What Are Wax Melts?
Wax melts are very like candles, but instead of being in a jar or candle holder, they are just scented pieces of wax that have no wick. Wax melts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, often being poured into a mould to set. When the wax melts are cold and solid, you will be able to smell their scent, however once the wax is warmed up and melted using a wax burner, the scent is released throughout your whole room.
How Do We Use Wax Melts?
It could not be easier to use wax melts. Some wax melts come in snap bars, which need to be broken up before use, while others come as individual melts. Place one or more pieces on top of your melt warmer. If you have an electric warmer, you will need to turn it on, and if you have a tealight warmer, you will need to light a tea light and place it at the bottom of your warmer.
This will allow the wax to melt and spread the fragrance throughout your home. Once you have finished, you need to turn of your warmer, or blow out the candle in order to allow the wax melt to solidify. This can be stored and then used again, giving you even more hours of scent. When your wax melt is no longer producing fragrance, you can dispose of it when the wax hardens. The melt will pop cleanly out of the top of the wax warmer, and you can then place it in the bin.
What Are the Best Wax Melts and Which Ones Should I Avoid?
There are many different types of wax melts available on the market – in different shape and sizes and made out of different materials. Most wax melts are either made with soy wax or paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is a by product of petroleum and has been found to release toxins in to the air, which a study by South Carolina State University linked to negative effects on health – such as leading to issues with asthma and lung cancer. Soy wax is a much more natural product that burns cleaner and lasts longer. Always look for 100% eco soy wax melts as these are the best on the market. At VS Fragrances, all our wax melts are 100% eco soy wax, and they are also cruelty free and vegan friendly.
What Makes Wax Melts Different From Candles?
In many aspects candles and wax melts serve the same purpose and are very similar. Wax melts however are more versatile and can be easily personalised for your taste. Candles will only come in one scent, whereas wax melts can be mixed, and fragrances combined to create totally unique scents. Quality wax melts also tend to be more affordable than quality candles.
Wax Burners
When it comes to burning your wax melts, there are two main types of wax burner – electric burners and tealight burners. Burners can come in many different designs and are made from different materials to suit the aesthetic of your home. Here is some more information about each burner type:
Tea Light Burners
Tea light burners require no electricity, and instead use tea light candles to melt the wax. Small tealight candles are lit and placed at the bottom of the burner, underneath a glass or ceramic dish. The dish holds the wax melts and will heat up due to the flame from the tealight below. Tealight burners allow you to see the flickering tea light flame, helping to create a cosy and romantic atmosphere in your home.
If you are looking to get the maximum strength of scent out of your wax melts, then tea light burners are the best option. This is because these burners will produce a higher level of heat and give a more powerful scent throw.
It is important not to leave tea light burners on unattended as there is a naked flame involved. If you have a busy household with large pets or small children, this may not be the safest option.
If you are looking for the perfect tea light burner, look no further than VS fragrances who have a large selection in a variety of different materials from our Luxury Glass Wax Melter for a clean and crisp look to our Chrome Ceramic Wax Melter for a more modern aesthetic.
Electric Burners
An alternative type of wax burner that does not rely on a naked flame is an electric burner. This is seen as a slightly easier way to melt you wax as all you have to do is plug it in and the burner will automatically heat up. The burner works by using a lamp that heats up the wax, however it does not reach the temperatures that a tea light burner will. This means that usually the scent produced from the wax melts is not as strong and will not carry as far in your home. A benefit to this is that the scent in the wax will last longer.
Electric wax burners are ideal if you have a busy home as they do not have a naked flame as we previously stated, they also enclose the heat meaning that if the lamp is knocked over, it will be safer than a tea light burner.
